The Great Migration Safari 2013: Day 1

What a start!  We seemed to pick up right where we left off last year – the big 5 on the first afternoon.  The rarest of the five, the black rhino came out early in the afternoon, and the leopard (which completed the set) arrived out of the darkness on our way back to camp.  The afternoon was all about lions however, and a female with 4 small cubs kept our cameras clicking most of the afternoon.  Another lioness with 3 little cubs tucking into a fresh warthog kill also welcomed us back.

Major sightings of the day:

  • Elephants
  • Buffaloes
  • 1 lioness with 3 small cubs on a warthog kill
  • 1 lioness with 4 small cubs
  • Black rhino
  • Hyaenas being chased by zebra
  • 1 lioness
  • Leopard

The Classic South African Safari: Day 4

Our final morning on safari started off with a bang, with a large male leopard actively marking his territory.  We spent a good forty minutes with him in some glorious light, before he slinked away into the reeds.  A couple of good rhino sightings and a great look at the largest African eagle provided some good photo opportunities, followed by an hour spent with a herd of elephants coming down to the river to drink.

Overall we saw 6 different leopards (7 sightings), 2 prides of lions, many herds of elephants, several rhino sightings, numerous buffalo, great general game including giraffe, zebra and hippo, and close to 70 different bird species!  The Classic South African Safari never disappoints, and this was no exception!

Major sightings of the day:

  • Male leopard
  • Herd of elephants
  • 2 Crashes of rhino
  • Zebra
  • Marshall eagle
  • Many different bird species

We crossed paths with a male leopard immediately out the camp, which started off another great day!  A pride of 9 lions, which included 2 four month old cubs provided some great photographic opportunities, but the stars of the day were the many elephants that were out and about.  Around 10 good sightings of elephants kept us clicking all throughout the day.  A bateleur eagle drinking, several rhinos and some obliging general game also found their way into the viewfinder.

Major sightings of the day:

  • Pride of lions
