Victoria Falls: Day 1

What a start in an amazing place!  Not long after landing in Zambia, we found ourselves on a private boat heading towards Livingstone island, the place where the good Dr. Livingstone first laid eyes on these magnificent falls. We figured if it is good enough for David, it is good enough for us, and so our first view of the mighty Victoria Falls was from the same spot where the western world ‘discovered’ the falls.  Your cameras will need to brave the mist created by the falling water, but the results speak for themselves – it is an amazing place to capture images.  For the more daring, this is the opportunity to swim right on the edge of the falls, and sneak a peak over the edge!

The magic of the Tiger Safari

The Tiger Safari 2014 was truly incredible!  We were fortunate enough to see 11 tigers in 12 safaris, with a leopard thrown in for good measure, as well as 80+ bird species and the unusual soft-shelled turtle.  The cameras were working overtime, as 9 0f  those tiger sightings produced wonderful photographic opportunities. Even the langur monkeys were getting in on the act, playfully filling our viewfinders on several occasions. The Tiger Safari 2015 is inching closer, (never quickly enough though), and if we have even half the luck we had this year, we will be in for an amazing time.  I have added a video below which should give you a good idea of what you will be in for!

The Tiger Safari 2014: Day 6

The last day of this amazing safari didn’t disappoint and it gave us one last tiger to photograph.  A large male tiger with a particularly noticeable mane was lying a short distance away from us, before he slowly got up and sauntered off along the river and out of sight. Another real highlight was spotting 3 different brown fish owls (a cousin of the Blackison’s fish owl in Japan).

Overall, we had 11 tiger sightings in 12 safaris, and we also saw a leopard, golden jackal, several species of mammal and close to 80 species of birds.  This was a fantastic safari, which left our guests with incredible photographs.  Bring on the Tiger Safari 2015!

Major sightings of the day:

  • Male tiger
  • 3 Brown fish owls
  • Spotted deer
  • Sambar deer
  • Indian macaque
  • Many different species of birds

The Tiger Safari 2014: Day 5

Easily the best day we have ever had on the Tiger Safari!  We spent the entire morning and the afternoon safaris with large male tigers.  We found 2 male tigers in the morning, and 1 male tiger in the afternoon who put on a magic show for us.  He was stalking deer, sitting in a waterhole and walking directly towards us, giving us amazing photo opportunities!

Major sightings of the day:

  • 3 sightings of large male tigers
  • Sambar deer
  • Spotted deer
  • Langur monkeys

The Tiger Safari 2014: Day 4

We traded stripes for spots with a great sighting of a female leopard moving up one of the cliffs.  Leopards are particularly difficult to find in India, and getting photos of this elusive cat is not an easy thing to do.  We also had many good photo opportunities with raptors, including oriental honey buzzards, an osprey and spotted owlets and as always, the spotted  and sambar deers were out in full force.

Major sightings of the day:

  • Female leopard
  • Sambar deer
  • Spotted deer
  • Many different bird species
